The Storm at Sea: The Koi Infant Beast

598 words

The day had not yet fully dawned when Feng Sanniang gathered the group and led them to a sea area over a dozen li from the nameless island.

At the same time, a thousand li away, a streak of golden light and a streak of yellow light were hurtling swiftly toward the nameless island. A hundred or so yards behind them, a vast expanse of white mist, nearly a hundred zhang in diameter, was skimming the water's surface in hot pursuit, and from within it came the faint sound of a crying infant.

The sound was desolate to the extreme, enough to make one’s hair stand on end.

“Elder Miao, send a flying sword message. See if they’re ready,” a deep voice suddenly rang out from the rapidly traveling yellow light.

“Alright!”

The Elder Miao in the golden light agreed without hesitation, and then a human figure flashed into the yellow light beside him, while the golden light on him transformed into a golden rainbow that vanished in an instant.

The large patch of white mist behind them, as if stirred by the sight, made the infant’s cries even sharper and more piercing, and soon the sound of thunder began to rise, growing louder and louder.

“Not good, this beast is using the Water Element Thunder again. Brother Gu, speed up!” The anxious cry of Elder Miao came from the yellow light, his voice tinged with great dread of the thunder behind.

“Rest assured, my Chaos Yuan Bowl is not slow!” The deep voice had barely finished speaking when the yellow light accelerated instantly, widening the gap with the white mist in the blink of an eye.

But the white mist seemed unwilling to give up. Amid the thunder and the infant’s cries, its speed also increased, carving a long, white trail across the sea that stretched endlessly into the distance.

Qu Hun and the others had already taken their positions at the formation gates they were to preside over, each holding a large blue banner. The banner was about two zhang long and gave off a brilliant blue glow that was dazzling to the extreme.

The six late Foundation Establishment cultivators all wore grave expressions. Stationed over a hundred zhang apart from each other, they floated on the sea surface atop their magical tools, forming a semicircular pocket formation. Han Li stood behind Qu Hun, observing coldly. The young woman also stood to one side of the middle-aged Confucian scholar, her face betraying concern.

A moment later, a golden light suddenly tore through the sky and landed in Feng Sanniang’s hand, drawing the attention of the others.

“Everyone, be careful. The Koi Infant Beast will be here shortly! As soon as it enters the formation, seal the formation gate immediately.” Feng Sanniang seemed to have received some information and shouted to the others with a serious expression before releasing the golden light, letting it fly back into the sky.

Han Li’s heart tightened, and he stared unblinkingly in the direction the golden light had flown.

The others also tensed their faces, a faint pre-storm pressure emanating from them.

After an indeterminate time, the distant rumble of thunder grew louder and louder until, at last, a golden and a yellow rainbow were seen hurtling toward them from afar, with a large expanse of white behind them, as if something was in hot pursuit.

“So this is the Koi Infant Beast?”

Though Han Li could make out that the large, white mass behind them was merely mist, he could not imagine what monstrous form was hidden within it.
