Taiyi Zhenren

Taiyi Zhenren (a Golden Immortal of Chan Jiao who treated celestial law as a suggestion) never once asked his student, “Did you do it?” He only ever asked, “Who do I need to kill to make it right.” Of all the Twelve Golden Immortals, he alone understood that the path to transcendence does not require obedience—only unmatched brutality and unconditional love for the one you have chosen.

Story context

Try this image. Imagine a university professor—brilliant, tenured, respected by all the deans. But he has one student he adores beyond reason. A boy who is clearly a little unstable, wildly overpowered for his age, and has a habit of punching holes in the wall whenever someone contradicts him. Other professors say the boy should be expelled, suspended, at least given detention. This one professor says, "No. I will not correct him. I will instead buy him better weapons. And if you try to suspend him, I will burn your office down." Now imagine that the university is the entire cosmic hierarchy of Heaven. The weapons are immortal-grade artifacts that could level mountains. And the burning—well, it's not metaphor. That is Taiyi Zhenren.

Why it matters

If you've heard the name Nezha, you know the basics of the story: a boy born from a ball of flesh, wielding a magic cosmic ring and a red sash, who fought the Dragon King, killed a dragon prince, and later died by his own hand to pay off a karmic debt. Nezha is a rebel, a wild child, a killer-god. But Nezha did not invent himself. Someone handed him that ring. Someone taught him that it was acceptable to kill a dragon when the dragon was wrong. Someone showed up, at the crucial moment, not to scold the child, but to incinerate the person who had come to collect on the debt. That someone is Taiyi Zhenren. And what the popular stories always leave out—because they're busy being exciting—is the quiet, almost feral loyalty of the teacher. He is the one who built a weapon-master out of a disaster-child. And he did it without once asking, "What would Heaven think?"
