Why it matters

This chapter is a masterclass in tension building before the main event. The first half is pure political and social kowtow—watch Elder Wufeng absolutely milk the Black-White College’s newfound fame. Then we get the curveball pairing, which feels unfair until the Emperor’s cold logic: one of his top seven must fall, and the only woman is the most expendable. The real treat, though, is the brief but brutal clash between Slovenly Trulyear and Ninefate Trulyear. We finally see Ninefate’s hidden Grand Dao—and Slovenly’s snake-like counter is a beautiful payoff to his otherwise passive turtle style. This sets up the quarterfinals with an early death-match that will shake the standings.
