Story context

The top twelve are locked in, and Anchang Commandery—with its two Black-White College monsters—has become the talk of the Grand Xia. Elder Wufeng is practically drunk on glory, fielding diplomatic overtures from ancient clans and top sects who now believe the Black-White College is a nexus of fate. But the real bomb drops when the Grand Xia Emperor announces the first match of the fourth round: Slovenly Trulyear vs. Ninefate Trulyear. Two top-tier contenders pitted against each other far too early. Get ready for a slugfest that has even the Pure Yang True Immortals arguing.

Why it matters

This chapter is a masterclass in tension building before the main event. The first half is pure political and social kowtow—watch Elder Wufeng absolutely milk the Black-White College’s newfound fame. Then we get the curveball pairing, which feels unfair until the Emperor’s cold logic: one of his top seven must fall, and the only woman is the most expendable. The real treat, though, is the brief but brutal clash between Slovenly Trulyear and Ninefate Trulyear. We finally see Ninefate’s hidden Grand Dao—and Slovenly’s snake-like counter is a beautiful payoff to his otherwise passive turtle style. This sets up the quarterfinals with an early death-match that will shake the standings.
