Zhu Zizhen

Zhu Zizhen (a boar yao who served as the battering ram of the Seven Monsters of Mount Mei) was the kind of monster that dies before anyone bothers to ask if it ever wanted to be more than a jaw full of tusks. He was born in mud, fought in chains, and ended up as a star that brings disaster to strangers. If you remember him at all, it is because he was too slow to run from a divine spear.

Story context

Imagine you are a wild boar, rooting under a tree in the rain. You bite into a fruit that tastes like lightning, and suddenly—you understand that you exist. That one day you will stop existing. That the other boars around you are just moving meat. You try to explain this to them. They grunt and back away. You are no longer one of them. You are no longer anything at all. That is how Zhu Zizhen began his life as a yao. Not with a grand destiny, but with a stolen fruit and a head full of terror. He spent the rest of his short, stupid, violent life trying to find someone who would tell him what to do next.

Why it matters

If you have heard of Zhu Zizhen at all, it is probably as the boar-demon from the *Fengshen Yanyi* who got skewered by Nezha. In the old stories, he is a footnote—a two-line character whose only trait is being fat and slow. But those stories leave out the part where he had to shatter his own spine to walk upright, and where the Heaven tried to cook him alive just for wearing a human face. Let me tell you his real story. It is not long, but it is heavy.
