Story context

Two parallel lonely tracks, one dark infernal. In the shadow of Li Huowang's hollow attempt at a Mid-Autumn festival, Bai Lingmiao's service contract with the Bei School is brutally renewed. After her near-death and revival, the true weight of the spirit-dancer's yoke descends—not as a threat, but as a simple piece of homework. Meanwhile, Li Huowang navigates the peculiar folk customs of Silverstar City, only to be stood up by the bureaucracy and left to toast the moon with his ever-present hallucinations and his dog. This chapter is a bittersweet symphony of mundane isolation and cosmic servitude.

Why it matters

This is a chapter of quiet horror and profound loneliness. After the high-octane action of recent chapters, things slow down for a character study in desperation. Bai Lingmiao's arc is devastating—her small pride in helping is completely crushed under the weight of her new "promotion." For Li Huowang, the festival is just another night spent with dead people and hallucinations. Pay close attention to the Da Shen. Its moment of sentimental fragility with the jade pendant is our first real hint that it has a history and emotions of its own. Is it a monster, or is it just as trapped as Bai Lingmiao? Also, keep an ear out for that slurred, echoing voice in Li Huowang's recitation. Something is listening, and it's learning to talk back.
