Rehabilitation

A clinical term for physical therapy; in this chapter, it is repurposed as a method of forced separation from the parallel world, making medical care a psychological weapon.

Story context

Two worlds collide—and the collision has never been more brutal. In the Dao-Twisted World, Bai Lingmiao’s sight is failing, her fingers are raw from a kitchen accident, and her quiet grief is a slow, drowning thing. She is becoming a burden and she knows it. Meanwhile, in the modern world, Li Huowang is having lunch with his mother. It’s warm. It’s sweet. It’s a trap. When doctors arrive to take him for “rehabilitation,” his lucid mind immediately recognizes the danger: if they wheel him out that door, the body on the other side will wander off somewhere he can’t control. The horror here isn’t a monster with fangs—it’s the slow realization that being *sane* is its own kind of vulnerability.

Why it matters

This chapter is pure psychological tension—no battles, no spells, no monsters. The threat is a wheelchair and a doctor’s patient voice. It asks you to sit in the gut-churning dread of a man who is *too sane* for his own good. Pay close attention to the dialogue split: Bai Lingmiao’s internal confession (“My heart hasn’t let go, either”) echoes Sun Xiaoqin’s maternal nagging, creating a strange emotional resonance between the two women who love him in different worlds. The doctor’s final question—“What are you afraid of?”—is the chapter’s thesis. Li Huowang is afraid of exactly what the doctor offers: health, freedom, rehabilitation. Because that would mean leaving the loop, leaving the other world, and leaving the people there to rot. Sometimes being trapped is the only thing keeping you safe.
