Story context

Li Huowang’s hard-won secret is about to crack open. After glimpsing a forbidden line of text on Zhuge Yuan’s fan—something about a “Great Siming”—he barely escapes the karmic trap through sheer ignorance of classical Chinese. But no sooner has he crawled out of that hole than he lands in another. Back in the capital, the Knife-Pawnbroker Hong Da and the Supervisory Heavenly Office are waiting at his door, and they are *not* here for tea. Accused of stealing the Void Sword, Li Huowang finds himself cornered by old enemies—and one old “ally”—in a confrontation that turns the political screws tighter than ever.

Why it matters

This chapter is a masterclass in the novel’s core tension: Li Huowang is caught between two completely different threat vectors—the cosmic (karmic contamination from forbidden knowledge) and the political (being framed by a rival faction). The chapter’s opening scene with Zhuge Yuan provides a rare moment of dark comedy: the illiterate peasant is saved by his lack of education. But don’t get too comfortable. The second half hits like a hammer. Li Huowang’s confrontation with the Office agents shows him at his most strategically defiant—he doesn’t just defend; he *attacks*, redirecting the accusation toward political conspiracy. It’s a glimpse of the player he’s becoming.
