Tiantian City

The only city in the Southern Heavenly Region built entirely for cultivators, a neutral ground and the site of the number one trading convention.

Definition

The only city in the Southern Heavenly Region built entirely for cultivators, a neutral ground and the site of the number one trading convention.

Story context

The long road to Tiantian City finally reaches its destination—but before we even get our first glimpse of the legendary cultivator metropolis, Han Li and Elder Lü run into a creature of legend himself. This chapter is a masterclass in Mortal Stream worldbuilding done through social friction: we learn the political history of the Southern Heavenly Region’s trading convention, the bloody backstory of Tiantian City, and the terrifying weight of a single name—Marquis Nanlong. Get ready, fellow travelers. The air just got heavy.

Why it matters

This chapter is a slow-burn pressure scene. Nothing explodes, but a bomb has been placed on the table. Notice how Han Li does not react to Marquis Nanlong’s arrival with awe or anxiety; he observes, files data (the beasts, Lü’s fear, the procession’s density), and remains silent, letting Elder Lü handle the social front. This is classic Han Li: when the big fish swim in, you let the slightly smaller fish do the talking. The real drama here is the shifting power dynamic—from Han Li and Lü traveling as two Nascent Soul equals, to a three-way hierarchy where a true old monster outranks them both. Also worthy of note: Mu Peiling’s quiet presence. She is not ornamental here; she is a witness to Han Li’s social navigation, and her silence is its own kind of learning.
