This chapter is where Han Li makes the jump from passive holder of a mysterious artifact to active investigator. After a near-fatal encounter with a Heart Demon—the cultivation world’s version of a psychic ambush—he rediscovers the long-forgotten bottle and decides, with chilling pragmatism, to test its contents on living animals. The result is grotesque, unsettling, and perfectly in step with the Mortal Stream’s core aesthetic: no wonder, no reverence, just raw observation and cold method. Han Li doesn’t worship the bottle. He experiments on it.
This chapter introduces the novel’s central dynamic: Han Li treating his treasure as an object of study, not worship. The bottle is not a sentient benefactor—it is a tool he must crack through trial and error. Readers are primed for a long learning curve.
