A casual stroll through Yanling Fort’s market district takes a sharp turn when Han Li quite literally runs into a ghost from his past. Mo Caihuan—the mischievous little girl he once knew as Doctor Mo’s youngest daughter—is now a married woman with tears in her eyes and a dying mother at home. This chapter trades action for emotional weight, delivering one of the most poignant reunions in the early story. Behind the warm moment, however, lies a cold, brutal truth: the entire Mo family has collapsed. The Mo residence is gone, the Jingjiao Society is dissolved, and two of Mo Caihuan’s stepmothers are dead. Han Li, ever the pragmatist, can’t help but soften just enough to promise help—but the reader is left wondering what dark forces could have annihilated a once-prosperous household in the space of seven years.
