Chapter 501: The Weight of Love
Inside the quiet meditation chamber.
A stick of incense had been lit. The green-robed woman, greatly pleased by Shaoyan Chou’s defection, took a long while to fully sink into her dream.
…
Within the dream.
A vast grassy plain. A black-robed girl appeared out of thin air.
“Mm? How did I…” Yu Wei’s expression shifted. She immediately understood that she had been pulled here. Her gaze swept the area. In the distance, a green-robed woman was walking toward her.
“Greetings, Emissary.” Yu Wei quickly spoke with deference.
“Yu Wei, it’s been a long time,” the green-robed woman said with a smile. “You did very well on your last mission. I have another mission for you.”
Yu Wei’s heart tightened.
The last mission had actually been about capturing the Tuoshan Celestial Immortal alive, though Yu Wei hadn’t been the one to do the capturing. She only needed to provide some guidance. That mission had been an easy one, requiring very little from her, with no risk of exposure.
“Please give your orders, Emissary,” Yu Wei said respectfully.
“The mission concerns your Dao-companion, Ji Ning,” the green-robed woman said, carefully observing Yu Wei’s reaction.
Yu Wei’s heart tightened. She did not press for more.
“The Godking has decreed,” the green-robed woman said, “that you are to bring Ji Ning with you and perform a Greater Teleportation directly to the Fifth World.”
“I have never been to the Fifth World,” Yu Wei said hurriedly.
“The Three Thousand Major Worlds… the Godking has long since informed you of their approximate locations. You don’t need to teleport them to a precise spot. Anywhere within the entire Fifth World will do,” the green-robed woman said. “This should be easy for you.”
Yu Wei fell silent.
She could indeed do it. The Godking had given this order knowing full well she was capable.
But…
She refused!
She would rather die than do this!
“What do you intend to do?” Yu Wei pressed.
“Is that your place to ask?” the green-robed woman barked. “Does the Godking need to explain his commands to you?”
“I cannot do it.” Yu Wei shook her head. Her voice was soft, but utterly resolute.
“How can you say you can’t? You are Ji Ning’s Dao-companion. He trusts you absolutely. All you need to say to him is, ‘I want to take you somewhere. You’ll understand when we get there.’ It’s a simple sentence. Ji Ning won’t suspect a thing. You bring him with you, perform a Greater Teleportation, and arrive in the Fifth World. Your mission is complete,” the green-robed woman said.
Yu Wei said hurriedly, “I have already taken Patriarch Lu as my master. I stand a chance of entering the core of the Daoist Pantheon. If I lead Ji Ning to the Fifth World, I will be exposed!”
“If you are exposed, you will simply need to stop operating in the shadows and serve the Godking openly,” the green-robed woman said, her gaze turning cold. “You have spoken too freely today. Given that the target is your Dao-companion, I will permit this impertinence. But I will not permit it again.”
Yu Wei gritted her teeth.
“He is my Dao-companion,” Yu Wei said, looking at the green-robed woman.
“I know,” the green-robed woman said coldly.
“He is the most important person in my life,” Yu Wei said, meeting her gaze. “More important than my life itself.”
The green-robed woman’s expression froze. She frowned. “Are you going to resist?”
Yu Wei immediately fell to her knees, prostrating herself on the ground in utmost reverence. “The Godking granted me a new life. I am utterly loyal to him. If he ordered me to destroy the Black-White College or kill anyone else in the Grand Xia World, I would not hesitate. But Ji Ning is my Dao-companion. I will not harm him. Not even if it costs me my life.”
“You dare to defy the Godking’s orders?” the green-robed woman said, shocked. “You will be cast into the Infinite Hells, to suffer for eternity without hope of release!”
Yu Wei remained prostrate, saying nothing further.
The green-robed woman stared at her. “You know the consequences of defying the Godking… I will give you one last chance…”
“Ask me a hundred times. A thousand times. My answer will be the same.” Yu Wei remained prostrate.
“Then await your descent into the Infinite Hells.” The green-robed woman waved her hand and vanished from sight.
…
Night.
In their bed, Ji Ning and Yu Wei were sleeping together. Though immortals had no need for sleep, the sensation of slumber was truly wonderful. It was an excellent way to dispel the weariness of the heart. Even the most powerful immortals would occasionally indulge in a night’s sleep, and some carefree ones would sleep for ten thousand years at a stretch.
Suddenly, Yu Wei’s lashes fluttered. She opened her eyes.
“It has finally come.”
Pain filled Yu Wei’s eyes.
This was the day she had always feared. She had thought that by becoming Patriarch Lu’s disciple, she would become more useful and the Godking would not lightly expose her. She thought she could stay with Ji Ning for longer. But she had only been reunited with Ji Ning for half a year when the Godking’s orders arrived.
Yu Wei gently rested her head on Ji Ning’s chest, feeling the warmth of his body.
“What’s wrong?” Ji Ning woke as well, reaching out to embrace Yu Wei. He could feel that his wife seemed a bit fragile at this moment.
“Nothing. Just a nightmare,” Yu Wei said.
Ji Ning nodded gently.
He knew that his wife had suffered a tragic past-life, and in this life, her parents had died when she was young. She must have dreamed of something unpleasant.
“It was just a dream. Everything is getting better and better,” Ji Ning said, holding her close.
“Mm. Everything will get better and better,” Yu Wei said, smiling as well.
…
“You seem to be in a very good mood, wife. I’ve seen you smiling all day,” Ji Ning said, setting down his Northsea swords. The killing of those Celestial Immortals earlier had finally allowed his three Northsea swords to absorb enough savage killing intent to reach the Pure Yang low-grade level.
Yu Wei put down the jade plate of spirit-fruits and laughed. “Being together with you, husband, with no one to disturb us… a life like that of an immortal couple. Am I not allowed to smile?”
Ji Ning laughed as well.
Yes.
An immortal couple.
This cave estate held only the two of them. The Diancai Immortal was tactful enough not to disturb them unless it was important. This was their own private world. Calling it the life of an immortal couple was not an exaggeration.
“Ha ha. If only we could stay this carefree forever. My greatest dream is to live quietly with the one I love, until the end of time,” Ji Ning said, a trace of reminiscence in his eyes. “My father and mother are both gone now. But I still have you, wife.”
“Mm.” Yu Wei nodded gently.
But in her heart, she whispered silently, “Husband. This may be the last days we have together. I will leave you the best memories. I will smile. I will be happy.”
…
In a dark space.
On a towering throne ten thousand zhang high, a towering figure in black robes sat, his left hand gently and rhythmically tapping the armrest.
Below, Yu Wei knelt prostrate. The green-robed woman stood to one side.
“You have disappointed me greatly,” the Godking’s voice echoed through the dark space.
Yu Wei dared not offer any excuse.
“But I know your feelings for Ji Ning run deep,” the Godking said with a sigh. “Love… even gods and devils have been driven mad by it, and countless have been infatuated. I will pardon you this once. I will assign you no further missions concerning Ji Ning. If you defy me again, you will sink into the Infinite Hells for all eternity.”
“Thank you, Godking,” Yu Wei said, her face filled with emotion. The green-robed woman beside her revealed a look of astonishment.
Yu Wei had not expected to escape so easily. After all, the Godking could kill her with a single thought. In her past life, the Godking had planted a secret technique imprint on her very soul. With a single thought, he could draw her soul away and cast it into the Infinite Hells—an illusory hell constructed by the Godking, where her soul would endure endless suffering, forever without end. With a single thought, he could annihilate her soul entirely.
And she was genuinely grateful to him.
It was the Godking who had granted her a new life.
“Go.” The Godking waved his hand, and Yu Wei vanished.
“Godking,” the green-robed woman couldn’t help but say. She had followed the Godking for too long. This was not his style at all.
“By assigning her no further missions concerning Ji Ning, we can still make her unknowingly lead Ji Ning onto a path of doom,” the Godking said. “Furthermore, Yu Wei is a highly useful pawn. I will permit her this one moment of defiance.”
The green-robed woman’s eyes lit up. “The Godking is wise.”
In the meditation chamber.
Yu Wei opened her eyes, barely containing her excitement.
“Husband! Husband!” Yu Wei charged out of the meditation chamber and into the large courtyard outside. In the courtyard, Ji Ning was training with his Northsea swords. He was trying to gain a complete understanding of the Dao of the Sword. He could sense that he was walking the path toward ‘Grand Mastery of the Dao of the Sword.’ Even after grasping a sliver of Sword Force, his power had only increased by a limited amount. But his insights into the Dao of the Sword itself were coming far more quickly.
“Mm?” Ji Ning turned around. He smiled. “I haven’t finished my practice yet, wife. Do you need something?”
“Nothing.” Yu Wei sat down to the side, simply watching him.
She quickly sobered up from her excitement. Soon, she understood… even if she didn’t act against Ji Ning, she would still need to execute orders in the future, to act against others. She would even use her connection with Patriarch Lu to act against even more powerful figures. In short, if this continued, there would come a day when she was exposed.
The day of her exposure would also be the day she had to leave Ji Ning, perhaps even the day of her death.
“Will I have to leave him one day?” After this experience, Yu Wei felt even more reluctant to part.
That night.
Ji Ning and Yu Wei lay together in bed.
“Husband,” Yu Wei whispered in Ji Ning’s arms.
“Mm?” Ji Ning looked at her.
“Let’s have a child,” Yu Wei suddenly said.
“A child? Why? This is the era of the Great Tribulation of the Three Realms. When would we have the time to care for a child?” Ji Ning was surprised. He was a Fiendgod, and Yu Wei was a Celestial Immortal. It was very difficult for immortals and gods to conceive a child. Preventing pregnancy, however, was very easy. They simply needed to control their divine power and immortal power.
Yu Wei looked at him. “I want one. Even if one of us dies in the Great Tribulation of the Three Realms, at least we would still have our child.”
“Why would you say something like that?” Ji Ning said.
“If you die, would you leave me all alone in this world?” Yu Wei said. “You’ve faced danger several times before. I’ve been truly terrified. If you weren’t here, I couldn’t go on living in this world.”
Ji Ning thought back to when he had been exiled to the Realm of Annihilation. His heart softened. He nodded. “Alright. If you want a child, we’ll have one. But I’m a Fiendgod, and you’re a Celestial Immortal. It will be very difficult to conceive.”
“Difficult or not, we’ll try,” Yu Wei said seriously.
“Then here I come.” Ji Ning smiled, gently removing Yu Wei’s thin robes.
The night was hazy. Ji Ning felt as though he were drunk, utterly lost in the moment…
Whether by luck or truly by the grace of the heavens, Ji Ning and Yu Wei—a Fiendgod and a Celestial Immortal—succeeded in the third month. Yu Wei was with child.
After becoming pregnant, Yu Wei would spend her days sitting there, stroking her belly, smiling as she watched Ji Ning practice his sword. Her belly showed no sign of swelling at all, but Yu Wei still loved to stroke it. Because she was stroking the child she and her husband had made together.
Ji Ning would lose himself in his sword techniques, and whenever he stopped, he would see his wife sitting to the side, watching him with a smile.
Ji Ning felt a profound warmth.
It had been so long…
Since his parents had departed, he had not felt such warmth. This feeling of warmth was truly intoxicating, filling him with strength! In the future, when the child was born, he and his wife could play with the child together. It would surely be even more wonderful.
“Mm?” Ji Ning suddenly stopped his sword practice.
“What’s wrong?” Yu Wei, who had been eating spirit-fruits on the side, couldn’t help but ask.
“My Primaltwin has reached perfection in his Heartforce control,” Ji Ning said, his eyes shining with excitement.
“Then your Primaltwin is about to undergo his Heavenly Tribulation?” Yu Wei was stunned.
