Chapter 754: Mental Illness
No one was at Orange Isle at night, and no one was there during the day either. The only new addition was the spray-painted slogans against the corrupt developer, now more visible on the walls.
When Li Huowang spotted Wu Qi's RV and Qing Wanglai's luxury car, he knew he was late.
He led Yang Na up the concrete steps of the unfinished building. When he reached the floor, he found the others already gathered in a circle, arguing about something.
"So according to you, this won't work and that won't work either—are we supposed to just sit here and wait to die?" Chen Hongyu's voice echoed through the empty space.
When Qing Wanglai saw Li Huowang and Yang Na approaching, he gave a slight chin-lift and continued. "Naturally, we can't just wait. So we strike first and seize the initiative."
"Zhao Lei has already talked. Through him, we know their temporary base. So we need to be fast and hit them before they relocate."
"Is that so?" Li Huowang's spirits lifted. After being under their surveillance for so long, they were finally going to fight back.
"How many guns can you get?" Li Huowang asked Qing Wanglai eagerly.
"Not a single one. I have money, but I didn't make it by arms trafficking."
"Tch." Li Huowang dumped all the stun guns from his plastic bag onto the floor. "These alone aren't enough. We should grab some knives too. Crossbows would be best."
Qing Wanglai let out a soft sigh, as if exasperated by Li Huowang's suggestion. "Li Huowang, we live in a society governed by law, you know? Can we not default to knives and guns every time we have a problem?"
"The rule of law? We want to use the law with them, but do they want to use the law with us? People are dead and you're talking about the rule of law? What, is your gun's name 'Justice'?"
"I've got it covered!" An excited Qian Fu walked to the corner and pulled back a plastic tarp, revealing a stack of steel rebars underneath, each one filed down to a razor-sharp point at one end.
Judging by the dried cement on them, he'd scavenged them from this very unfinished building.
"Everyone, hold on a second!" Chen Hongyu's voice stopped the others.
"If you do what you're planning—kill everyone in that place—do you really think that will solve the problem?"
"They're an organization. An organization trying to steal our abilities. The people on the ground are just grunts. Killing a hundred of them won't matter. How can any of you be sure the real boss isn't overseas, directing everything via satellite phone?"
The group stood frozen, listening to Chen Hongyu's alarming logic.
"Since we have this chance to seize the initiative, we should think about how to use this victory to expand our advantage and end this trouble once and for all."
"I agree with Sister Chen's suggestion." Hearing Qing Wanglai speak, Li Huowang turned to look at him.
"Whatever their projection is, I don't think it's that simple. We can't just look at the surface; we need to focus on the core."
"No matter what their projection is, once we resolve the internal problem, they will naturally disappear."
Li Huowang looked from Chen Hongyu to Qing Wanglai. "So if we're not going to fight, then tell me what the hell we are going to do. There are a lot of them. Are you going to talk them into surrendering?"
Qing Wanglai pulled a sealed test tube from his pocket. The liquid inside sloshed back and forth as he moved.
"Highly volatile, colorless, odorless. Loss of consciousness, skeletal muscle relaxation, short-term amnesia."
When he heard that string of effects, Li Huowang's eyes widened. "You have something like that? Where did you get it?"
This was far better than a stun gun.
"Legitimate channels." Qing Wanglai put the tube back into his pocket. "It's best not to use force if we can avoid it. With these people as leverage, we can try to negotiate with them. That would be beneficial for both sides."
"Even if the negotiation fails, we can find out what they want. That will help us understand the nature of the projection."
"Fine. No time to waste. Let's go."
Li Huowang didn't discard the stun guns or the steel rebars. If Qing Wanglai's sedative didn't work, these would be his backup.
They carried the supplies downstairs in small groups.
As they descended, Li Huowang asked Qing Wanglai, "Since Zhao Lei confessed, did you send him abroad like you promised?"
"No." He shook his head. "Zhao Lei betrayed them. He doesn't dare leave. If he goes out, he dies."
"Whether he likes it or not, he's on our side now. I let him go. Given time, he'll come back to us on his own."
"You're that sure? Do you know him that well?"
"Not really. But he was on our side before."
As the two chatted, Qian Fu walked past them from behind, head down, in a hurry.
Just as he turned the corner ahead, Li Huowang caught him glancing back. Qian Fu's eyes were filled with fear and shock.
"Qian Fu, hold on a second. I have something to ask you." Sensing something was wrong, Li Huowang spoke as his hand slowly reached for the stun gun in his pocket.
But hearing this only made Qian Fu run faster.
"Go after him! His personality switched!" Li Huowang yelled urgently as he gave chase.
Seeing that Li Huowang and the others were closing in and that he was cornered, Qian Fu scrambled into a corner of the stairwell. Gripping the sharpened rebar, he thrust it viciously at Li Huowang's chest.
The sharp point forced Li Huowang back two steps. The others closed in, forming a semicircle around Qian Fu, who now had his back against the brick wall.
"What the hell do you lunatics want?!" Qian Fu snarled at them.
"Go have your psychotic break somewhere else! Why do you have to drag me into it?!"
"Haven't I suffered enough?! What do I have to do to get you to leave me alone?! Get out of my way! I'm going back to the mental hospital! I need treatment!"
"Qian Fu, calm down. Look at me. Look at my face." Qing Wanglai stepped forward, trying to calm him. "Do you remember who I am? We've met before."
"Who are you? They're all delusional maniacs! And you, Qing Wanglai, you're the craziest one of them all!"
"Stop pretending! I know everything! You killed those two orderlies! You framed someone else!"
Hearing this, Qing Wanglai winced slightly. He leaned toward Li Huowang and said in a low voice, "This is bad. Qian Fu's second personality has a very unstable condition."
"Is that so?" Li Huowang tightened his grip on the stun gun and glanced at Qing Wanglai's profile without saying another word.
"I'll say it one more time! You can all be as crazy as you want! Just leave me out of it! Move aside!"
"Alright, we'll move. Just stay calm." Under Qing Wanglai's direction, everyone cleared the stairway.
Just as Qian Fu was trembling and about to run downstairs, he suddenly saw a shiny object fall from above and shatter at his feet with a sharp crack.
He froze for a second, realizing it was a test tube. Liquid was spilling out of it.
Just as he was about to bolt downstairs, his consciousness began to blur. His limbs went limp. He collapsed to the ground and knew nothing more.
