The Confession

1,859 words

“There isn’t much more to tell after that. I returned to the Moon-Masking Sect and waited until our sect had secured a foothold in Northern Liang before slipping back into Yue Country to search for you again. But the news I received was grim—I only knew that the Ghost Spirit Sect had hunted you again. I could not learn the details. Soon after, I was discovered by the demonic path and forced to return to the Nine Nations Alliance. After that, I had no word of you at all. I thought you had most likely fallen. The Inner Demon I held concerning you gradually faded as well. Later, by fortune, I successfully condensed my Nascent Soul and became an Elder of the Moon-Masking Sect, where I have remained until now.” Nangong Wan spoke calmly.

As Han Li listened to her quiet account, his expression shifted several times. He had never known that she had done so much for him back then. He looked at her with a trace more warmth in his eyes.

“And what about Wei Lichen?” After a long pause, Han Li could not help but ask.

“Wei Lichen! I ran into him several years ago when I was traveling abroad. He is an Elder of the Sublime Transformation Sect. I do not like him. He is practically a textbook hypocrite: graceful on the surface, but rotten underneath. I have heard he keeps at least seven or eight so-called female disciples. There are also rumors that he has secretly cultivated the art of stealing Yin to supplement Yang. His proposal to me was probably no different—he had no good intentions. The first time he proposed, I refused him outright.” Nangong Wan’s voice carried a cold sneer.

“Refused? Then how did it become what it is now?” Han Li asked, a puzzled look on his face.

Instead of answering directly, Nangong Wan suddenly asked:

“Do you know of the Three Great Nascent Soul Cultivators of the Heavenly South?”

“Of course. The Righteous Path, the Demonic Path, and the Nine Nations Alliance each have one cultivator at the late Nascent Soul stage—just one step from Deity Transformation. That is the only reason the major powers have maintained their balance all this time. As for the Nine Nations Alliance, there is a husband-and-wife pair of mid-Nascent Soul cultivators who are masters of combined techniques. Together, they can barely hold off a single late-Nascent Soul cultivator. What, does Wei Lichen have some connection to one of them?” Han Li asked with a grim expression, a bad feeling rising in his heart.

“Correct. Wei Lichen’s great-uncle is Wei Wuyan, one of the three great cultivators. This Wei Wuyan is the Supreme Elder of the Nine Nations Alliance. He cultivates a rarely known poisonous Dao technique—he can take a life with a mere gesture, without any visible means. His divine abilities are far beyond ordinary cultivators’ imagination.” Nangong Wan’s voice dropped. Her ten jade-like fingers intertwined nervously, and a bitter smile appeared on her face.

“Did Wei Wuyan personally make things difficult for you?” Han Li’s mouth twitched, and a fierce light flashed coldly in his eyes.

“Not quite. But Wei Wuyan did involve himself. Do you know, the current Grand Elder of the Moon-Masking Sect is not the old one. It is a former senior disciple of mine. This senior sister is not weak in cultivation, but she is highly ambitious and has always had conflicts with me. Although another Elder tried to mediate, our relationship has been terrible.” Nangong Wan said angrily.

Han Li’s expression darkened. He knew she had reached the crux of the matter.

Sure enough, Nangong Wan gritted her teeth and continued:

“After I rejected Wei Lichen’s proposal several times, he somehow managed to get Wei Wuyan to visit this senior sister personally. I do not know what they discussed, but only half a year later, during my cyclical reincarnation period under the Maiden Rebirth Art, she suddenly struck and subdued me. Then she forced me to marry Wei Lichen.”

“Has this senior sister of yours lost her mind? To use such methods against a fellow Nascent Soul Elder of the same sect?” Han Li was stunned, finding it hard to believe.

“Exactly. I never thought she would go this far. But the conditions Wei Wuyan offered were indeed hard for her to refuse. Later, I learned that if the Moon-Masking Sect agreed to the marriage, not only would our sect—and even the six major sects—be allowed to develop beyond Northern Liang, but Wei Lichen was willing to leave the Sublime Transformation Sect after marrying me and join the Moon-Masking Sect. With such a two-fold advantage, it is no wonder she would stop at nothing. She even announced that I had agreed to the dual cultivation without my consent and began preparing a celebration, trying to make the matter irrevocable. By the time I wanted to back out, it would have been impossible.” Nangong Wan let out a sarcastic laugh.

“So you never agreed to the marriage at all. And here you deliberately spoke of marrying someone, making my heart sink!” Han Li said, overjoyed.

“I should be asking you the questions! If you formed your Nascent Soul several years ago, why did you not come to me sooner? If you had come a year earlier, perhaps none of this trouble would have occurred.” Nangong Wan shot him a reproachful glance.

“It is not that I did not want to find you, but I…” Han Li was taken aback. He opened his mouth to explain, but when he thought about it, it was indeed strange.

He had always vaguely felt that Nangong Wan was someone he truly loved, but for some reason, he had never truly confronted this feeling. If he had not suddenly heard that she was about to marry, he might have still hesitated, unwilling to face this emotion directly.

While Han Li’s expression was shifting uncertainly, Nangong Wan elegantly stood up. She walked a few steps to stand before him, looking directly into his eyes, and said:

“In truth, my situation is much the same as yours. We both far surpass ordinary people in experience and divine ability, but when it comes to matters of the heart, it is our first time. We are both a little unfamiliar and afraid. Even though we have left deep marks on each other’s hearts, we are not ordinary mortal men and women. We cannot burn through all our emotions in a single, dazzling moment and then release them completely. For the sake of an optimal cultivation state of mind, we cultivators are forced to dilute most emotions and bury them deep down. After the passion fades, what remains is more likely the quiet and enduring companionship of mutual respect. So, when I learned you were still alive, I was overjoyed, but I still spent two full days and nights carefully considering. In the end, I decided to follow my heart and accept you.”

Having said this gently, Nangong Wan stretched out her slender, fair hand and took hold of one of Han Li’s palms.

Han Li was silent for a moment. Then, without a word, he placed his other hand on top of hers, feeling the delicate smoothness of a woman’s hand. A warmth arose in his heart.

Nangong Wan’s face flushed. She quickly pulled her hands back and shot him a reproachful glance.

Han Li did not mind. Instead, he smiled faintly and suddenly said:

“Wan’er, you are trapped here, but you seem so calm. You must have already found a good way to escape. Otherwise, you would not have shown not a single trace of worry from the moment we met.”

Hearing this, Nangong Wan pursed her lips and chuckled. A hint of mischievousness flickered in her starry eyes as she said:

“You are quick to pick up on things! Indeed, I have been confined to my cave dwelling. But only a few of the top leadership know about it. The ordinary disciples are unaware. Otherwise, I would not have been able to receive that transmission talisman from Junior Disciple Tang. However, to prevent me from escaping, they placed several kinds of restrictions on me. The others are nothing. They do not know that once my Maiden Rebirth Skill entered the Nascent Soul stage, I gained many incredible abilities. Those ordinary restrictions cannot hold me at all. Given some time, I can fully recover my mana. But the only thing is the Heart-Sealing Technique that my senior sister personally cast. It is truly troublesome to break. This technique was meant to be used during the grand ceremony. If I stubbornly refused to agree to the marriage, she planned to use it to temporarily control me. She planted this restriction using her very own essence blood. The key to this restriction lies in a single restriction token. Unless that magical tool is destroyed, as long as I am within a hundred li of her, I will be subject to its control. Fortunately, our cultivation levels are not too far apart. This control can only force me to perform simple actions. She cannot drive any of my mana.”

“So, what was your original plan?” Han Li asked curiously.

“Hehe! I was planning to wait a few days before the grand ceremony, choose the moment when they were most relaxed, unexpectedly recover my mana, and then flee far, far away. As long as I am outside the range of the restriction token, she cannot do anything to me. But now that you are here, I naturally leave this problem to you. After all, you are the man who is going to marry me. And I have heard that you easily defeated a Nascent Soul stage Dharma Warrior of the Moulan tribe. You should have some tricks up your sleeve, right?” Nangong Wan said with a light laugh.

“Heart-Sealing Technique? That restriction is indeed troublesome. Aside from destroying that token, there is no simple way to break it.” Han Li frowned, muttering to himself in deep thought.

“If it really is impossible, it doesn’t matter. The two of us can just leave the Moon-Masking Sect far behind.” Nangong Wan’s bright eyes flickered with indifference.

“It’s fine. Isn’t it just a restriction token? It should be in your senior sister’s hands. I’ll go and take it. I’ll vent your anger for you while I’m at it!” Han Li’s eyes narrowed into slits as a cold light flashed through them, and he spoke with a surge of boldness.

“I was just testing your intentions! I didn’t actually mean for you to steal the token. That senior sister of mine has already cultivated to the mid-Nascent Soul stage. Her complete set of techniques and divine abilities are not something we early-stage cultivators can compare to. It’s better if we just slip away quietly. At worst, I can spend over ten years slowly refining this restriction.” Nangong Wan shook her head, pursed her lips, and smiled. A hint of playful mischief appeared on her beautiful face.

Han Li was speechless. He suddenly recalled the first time he had met this woman—that strange, spirited girl.
