Chapter 653: A Name Shakes the Region – The Thirty-Year Pact
"Master… you… you can't be serious?" Silvermoon's beautiful eyes were wide, a hint of hesitation in her voice.
"Whether I'm serious or not, you'll know in time. For now, summon that woman in. With her level of cultivation, she won't be able to see through your fox-spirit form." Han Li gave the order in a noncommittal tone.
"As you command, Master!" Silvermoon replied respectfully, though her heart was full of suspicion.
Han Li turned and walked into the main hall.
After the time it took to drink a cup of tea, Silvermoon strode in with elegant steps, followed by a rather haggard-looking Mu Peiling. It seemed the past short while had not been easy on this woman.
"Master, I have brought Miss Mu," Silvermoon said, stopping before Han Li with proper deference.
"Mm, I see. You may withdraw," Han Li said with a faint nod.
"Then this servant will take her leave."
Silvermoon cast a sidelong glance at the Mu woman, then pursed her lips in a smile as she exited the hall.
"Greetings, Senior Han." Mu Peiling performed a curtsy, then stood with her hands clasped, silent, looking as though she was ready to accept whatever punishment Han Li saw fit.
Seeing her like this, Han Li's brow furrowed slightly, his gaze sweeping across her strikingly beautiful face.
"You should know why I called you here. Your fabrication of words has left me—someone who has only recently advanced to Nascent Soul—with the impression of being arrogant and domineering among those immortal families. Forcibly taking a woman who was already betrothed as a concubine is, after all, not a pleasant thing to have spread about. Of course, with my current cultivation, the Mu and Yan families naturally wouldn't dare voice any complaints, and I wouldn't bother with it either. But that doesn't mean I will tolerate your audacity. You must have already resigned yourself to being punished by me, haven't you?" Han Li showed no sign of anger; instead, he enunciated each word with extreme calm.
"Senior, please forgive me. This junior's actions were indeed audacious. But rather than marry that Yan family man, this junior would prefer to be your concubine," the Mu woman said, lifting her head, her face pale.
"Hmph! Since you've already spread the word that you are my concubine, I naturally cannot stand idly by, nor can I simply 'clarify' this so-called rumor. Otherwise, those immortal families would surely think that I, a newly promoted elder of the Falling Cloud Sect, am weak and easily bullied—unable to protect even a Foundation Establishment female cultivator. And by now, this rumor has likely spread throughout the entire cultivation world. Tell me, how should I deal with you?" Han Li's gaze flickered as he spoke slowly.
"This junior has nothing to say. Senior may dispose of me as he sees fit. Peiling bears no grudge." The Mu woman bit her lip gently, then spoke in a low voice.
"Since the outside world now believes you to be my concubine, I will give you two choices. The first is to be my concubine in name, but in truth serve as a maid under my command for twenty years. Once the time is up and this matter has faded, I will naturally grant you your freedom. But a maid is a maid—do not expect any help from me on the path of cultivation." Han Li's voice was heavy.
"Then… what is the second choice?" Upon hearing this, a flicker of disappointment crossed the Mu woman's face, and she couldn't help but lift her head to ask.
"The second path is to turn your lie into truth. Truly become my concubine, serving by my side for life, never to betray me. To someone at my bedside, I would not be petty—naturally, when in a good mood, I might offer some guidance on cultivation. However, let me make it clear in advance: if you become my concubine, I will place a Spirit-Sealing Curse on you, to guard against any sudden change of heart. After all, today you are willing to be my concubine; should you change your mind tomorrow, some of my secrets might fall into the ears of others." Han Li stared at the woman, his tone flat.
"I…" Mu Peiling was momentarily stunned by these words, then her jade-like face shifted between uncertainty and contemplation, as though she was carefully weighing Han Li's conditions.
It seemed this woman did not have too much resistance to the idea of becoming Han Li's concubine.
"I know that you have always held yourself in high regard. Even though I am a Nascent Soul cultivator, I may not be the ideal husband in your eyes. But that doesn't matter. Fellow Daoist Mu is not my ideal partner either. None of this prevents me from taking you as a concubine. If you wish to receive my protection and walk further on the path of cultivation, this price is not too great. And from what you've learned of me over the years, you know I am not a violent, cruel, or eccentric person. Even with the Spirit-Sealing Curse, staying by my side will not be a hardship—it is not a wronging of you. And should the day come when you truly earn my trust, lifting the curse is not out of the question. Otherwise, you can serve as my maid for twenty years. It will pass in the blink of an eye." Han Li spoke casually, his gaze already shifting away from her face, as if either choice was fine by him.
"Senior, could you allow Peiling a few more days to think it over?" The Mu woman's mind was in turmoil; she was unwilling to be controlled but also couldn't bear to give up the guidance and help of a Nascent Soul cultivator. Unable to make a decision on the spot, she could only speak hesitantly.
As for becoming Han Li's concubine, just as he had said, she had long since come to terms with the idea. She didn't see anything wrong with being a concubine to a Nascent Soul cultivator.
After all, if any Nascent Soul elder were to announce that he was willing to take a Foundation Establishment female cultivator as a concubine, a whole crowd of young, beautiful female cultivators from various sects would be moved to line up for the chance.
"Fine. Go down the mountain first. Come back here in two days. That should be more than enough time for you to think it through." Han Li nodded magnanimously, showing no intention of making things difficult, and then called for Silvermoon.
Mu Peiling took her leave and, led by the reappearing Silvermoon, exited the hall in a daze.
After a while, Silvermoon walked back in gracefully.
"Master, those two conditions of yours… they really are…" Silvermoon's bright eyes shimmered with a hint of a knowing smile.
"Really are what? Do you think they're too harsh? This is exactly what that woman wanted, and now I have a young and beautiful concubine." Han Li glanced at Silvermoon, his expression unchanged.
"'Harsh' is certainly not the word. It's just that this woman's heart is firmly set on the Dao, but she also carries an air of pride. It must be a difficult choice for Miss Mu. Still, Master's secrets are so numerous; if you truly intend to take her in, that Spirit-Sealing Curse is certainly necessary." Silvermoon let out a soft sigh, speaking with a hint of melancholy.
"Silvermoon, I've noticed you seem to have quite a favorable impression of her," Han Li said, suddenly examining Silvermoon's alluring figure with some surprise.
"I wouldn't call it favorability. It's just that her temperament gives me a faint sense of familiarity. It reminds me of someone very close to me from the past, who had a similar disposition. Without realizing it, I've developed a bit of concern for her." Silvermoon was taken aback, then gave a wry smile.
Hearing this, Han Li nodded without further inquiry.
After that, Silvermoon wisely chose not to bring up the matter of Mu Peiling again, instead discussing with Han Li the process of refining the Dry Blue Ice Flame—the matter that concerned him most.
…
Two days later, Mu Peiling was once again led into the main hall by Silvermoon to see Han Li.
"Have you made up your mind? Will you serve as a maid for twenty years, or accept my Spirit-Sealing Curse?" Han Li looked at the woman and asked bluntly.
"This junior has thought it over. In the cultivation world, becoming a concubine to a Nascent Soul cultivator is, for a low-level female cultivator like myself, a kind of opportunity. However, if I am to become Senior's concubine, I hope that Senior can grant me a promise. If Senior agrees to this condition, Peiling will willingly submit to having her spiritual sense sealed and will never leave Senior's side for life." Clearly, the cold, beautiful woman had already made up her mind on her second visit. She took a light breath and spoke calmly.
"A promise? Let's hear it." Han Li's expression didn't change upon hearing this, as if he had anticipated it.
"I know that Senior Han is not a man driven by lust. So I hope that Senior can agree to this: after taking me as a concubine, do not claim my Primordial Yin for thirty years. I am currently at a critical stage in my cultivation, and whether I can form a Core depends on these thirty years. The cultivation technique I practice places great importance on a virgin body. That is also the reason I fought tooth and nail to avoid marrying now. Once the thirty years are up, whether or not I succeed in forming a Core, I will formally cultivate dual cultivation with Senior." Perhaps she felt her request was somewhat excessive, or perhaps the mention of dual cultivation embarrassed her. After she spoke, a flush rose to her cheeks, making her appear even more alluring.
"Thirty years! Heh. Fine. I agree to your condition." Hearing this, Han Li not only failed to show any dissatisfaction, but a flash of light gleamed in his eyes before he agreed without hesitation.
"Ah… thank you, Senior, for your understanding!" Mu Peiling was slightly stunned by how readily Han Li had agreed, then burst into joy.
"In two days, I will formally inform the other two elders of our sect about my intention to take you as a concubine. But since we won't be engaging in dual cultivation for thirty years, I will open a smaller separate cave dwelling on one of the subsidiary peaks. You may reside there temporarily for your cultivation. When I have time, I will go there to give you some guidance." Han Li pondered briefly before adding.
"Yes, Peiling will follow your every instruction." Clearly satisfied with this outcome, the woman agreed without further thought.
"Since you are now my concubine, there's no need to address me as 'Senior' with every other word. You may call me 'Young Master.' I am only a little over two hundred years old—compared to a life span of over a thousand years, I am still quite young." Han Li's expression softened, and a faint, almost ambiguous smile flickered across his face. His eyes swept over the cold, beautiful woman with a hint of open appraisal, carrying a trace of appreciation.
