Winds Stir Beyond the Seas - The Bone Box

1,755 words

“You want to seize power.” Han Li’s expression did not change as he spoke the words flatly.

“Exactly. We are cultivators—why should we be ordered around like those mortals by so-called elders? We should be the village elders. I am a Foundation Establishment cultivator; being bossed around by mortals for so long is unbearable. Before this, we cultivators were too few to act, but with the two of you joining us, we can accomplish our goal.” The other red-faced elder spoke, a strange light flickering in his eyes.

“I’m not interested. Please return, the three of you. Consider that I was never told any of this.” Han Li swept his gaze across the three men, and with an expressionless face, uttered words that made their faces fall sharply.

“What? Are you Fellow Daoist truly content to remain subordinate? If we seize the village’s elder positions, we can rule this village together, with no distinction between us. Even in an environment as harsh as this, we could live as we please.” The long-bearded elder forced a smile as he continued his persuasion.

“I believe, Fellow Daoists, that you have misunderstood one thing. The two of us have never said we would stay in this village. We will leave this place in two days. So no matter what you say, Miss Mei and I will not be drawn into this.” Han Li stroked his chin, his voice calm.

“Leave here? Are you dissatisfied with this village and wish to go to another? Fellow Daoist, you may not know this, but among all the human villages, ours is one of the largest. The conditions in other villages are far worse than here.” The long-bearded elder was momentarily taken aback and blurted out.

Upon hearing this, Han Li gave a faint smile and gently shook his head without a word.

“Could it be… the two of you are thinking of climbing Stormwind Mountain?” Seeing Han Li’s expression, a sudden flash of understanding crossed the hunchbacked elder’s face, followed by utter astonishment.

“Is it so strange that we do not wish to remain here and want to leave?” Han Li retracted his smile and replied noncommittally.

“It is not a matter of strangeness. It is whether the two of you truly know what Stormwind Mountain is and how much danger it holds.” The red-faced elder stroked his white beard, a peculiar look on his face.

“Although I do not know much, I have heard a general account from Elder Supreme.” Han Li glanced at the man and replied without revealing his thoughts.

“Hmph! How much does that fellow know of Stormwind Mountain’s terror? It’s all hearsay. The true horror of Stormwind Mountain is something that Fellow Daoist Yun and I have experienced firsthand. It is simply not passable for those of us who have lost our magic power. For one thing, the most powerful Yin Beasts of the Netherworld Domain lurk at the mountain’s base. Alert them by carelessness, and you will die without a burial place. Even if one were to pass the Yin Beasts, the Netherworld Wind and Illusory Mist on Stormwind Mountain kill just as invisibly. There is no chance of reaching the summit. Moreover, the idea that one can ride the rift from the summit to escape is just a legend. No one has truly attempted it. It may never have been possible at all.” The hunchbacked elder’s expression shifted several times before he spoke, his voice filled with lingering fear.

“The two of you have climbed Stormwind Mountain before? Could you tell me about it?” Han Li’s expression stirred as he fixed his gaze on them, showing considerable interest.

“There is nothing much to tell. Even if you hadn’t asked, Fellow Daoist Han, we would have brought it up—to dissuade you from any vain hope. When Fellow Daoist Jin and I first arrived here, we too were unwilling to live out our lives in this place. After preparing for over half a year, we gathered with three other Fellow Daoists from other villages and set out for Stormwind Mountain. But before we even neared the mountain, one of them was found by a Yin Beast and perished at its base. When we finally reached Stormwind Mountain, the remaining two hadn’t even climbed a quarter of the way before they were frozen to death by the Netherworld Wind. Fellow Daoist Jin and I could barely continue because we still had some Flame Stones on us. But the higher we climbed, the fiercer the wind. It became impossible to stand. In the end, we never even saw the Illusory Mist at the mountainside. We were swept off the rocks by the gale several times. Though we survived by luck, we dared not go further and had to turn back in despair. When we returned to the village, we fell gravely ill from the bone-penetrating wind. We lay in bed for several months before we could move again. After that, we completely abandoned any thought of escaping via Stormwind Mountain.” The red-faced elder spoke slowly, his eyes still showing traces of fear.

“That does sound terrifying.” Han Li stroked his chin, murmuring thoughtfully.

“‘Terrifying’ does not even begin to describe it. The two of you should put this idea to rest. It is not worth attempting. The outside world may be fine, but one must survive to enjoy it. It is better to stay with us and do something worthwhile. You are both still young. Once our lifespans are at an end, everything in this village will be yours.” The long-bearded elder tried to entice them, sounding very sincere.

“Fellow Daoists, there is no need to persuade me. Han will not give up until I have tried for myself. Of course, if I truly cannot scale Stormwind Mountain’s summit, I will naturally consider your suggestion.” Unwilling to make enemies of these three over this, Han Li softened his tone and gave a more tactful reply.

Hearing this, the three were displeased and tried to dissuade him further.

But Han Li seemed resolute, showing no sign of reconsideration.

With no other choice, the three turned their attention to Mei Ning. But the woman only said calmly, “I will go with Brother Han, whatever he decides,” leaving them equally dumbfounded.

Fortunately, Han Li had not rejected them outright. If his climb failed and he survived, they might still have a chance.

So after their persuasion proved futile, the three forced smiles and took their leave.

“Will he turn around and sell us out?” As soon as they were a distance from Han Li’s dwelling, the hunchbacked elder suddenly asked in a grim tone.

“Sell us out? What benefit would he gain from that? Could you not see? The woman is one thing, but that young Han is no fool. He wouldn’t do something so stupid. For now, I only hope that the two of them will back down on their own before they even reach Stormwind Mountain. If we act now, our chances are only fifty-fifty. With the two of them joining us, our strength would increase considerably. And we have that young Han to thank for unknowingly removing the greatest obstacle, Feng Tianji. Otherwise, that man’s martial arts would have been a real problem.” The long-bearded elder said dismissively.

“True. That man is indeed meticulous. He wouldn’t make trouble without benefit. But to be safe, we should assign someone to keep an eye on them. We can’t afford any mistakes.” The red-faced elder nodded in agreement.

“Brother Yun is thorough. Let’s do it that way. But be careful—don’t let him notice. However…” When the long-bearded elder reached the last sentence, a hint of confusion appeared on his face.

“However, what?” the hunchbacked elder asked, puzzled.

“I may be wrong, but I felt as if he was utterly confident in escaping this place. Even after hearing our account of Stormwind Mountain’s dangers, he seemed completely unconcerned. Could he truly have a way to scale the summit?” the long-bearded elder murmured to himself.

“Impossible. For one thing, that Netherworld Wind—no one can get past it. On that, Brother Yun and I can vouch for it with absolute certainty. The countless frozen corpses scattered below the mountainside are all cultivators and mortals who dreamed of escaping this place.” The hunchbacked elder shook his head in utter disbelief.

“Mmm… Perhaps it was just my imagination.” The long-bearded elder thought it over and found it unlikely, so he laughed at his own notion.

But Elder Jin, the red-faced man, was suddenly struck by a thought as he listened.

Once the long-bearded elder and the other two had left, Han Li exchanged a few words with Mei Ning before leaving the house as well. He first went to check on Feng, the middle-aged man, and found him dead, his throat pierced by the Gold Devourer Beetles.

Han Li took only a distant glance at the corpse before walking away expressionlessly.

For the next two days, Han Li continued gathering information from the villagers about the geography of the area, the locations of other villages, and the distribution of the Yin Beasts. Every scrap of knowledge that could help him escape this place gradually coalesced in his mind.

He even used the villagers’ descriptions to draw a detailed map himself.

After two days of such preparation, Han Li felt he was ready. He went to Elder Supreme and stated his intention to leave and attempt the climb of Stormwind Mountain.

The fat elder expressed his regret. After a few words of reluctant farewell, seeing that Han Li was determined, he did not press the matter and gave his consent.

Han Li and Mei Ning returned to their dwelling to rest for the night, planning to depart the next day. Just as they settled in, a figure came stealthily to their door and knocked.

“Fellow Daoist Yun?” Han Li was taken aback to see the red-faced elder standing before him.

“Fellow Daoist Han, I will be brief. I do not know if you truly have the ability to leave this place, but it is a hope nonetheless. I have a favor to ask. If you do manage to escape this great calamity and the opportunity arises, I hope you will deliver this box to our Talisman Sect.” The red-faced elder spoke with a grave expression, producing a rough bone box from his bosom and holding it out with both hands to Han Li.
