Wind Rising Beyond the Seas

1,740 words

By the third morning, just as the sky was beginning to lighten, the group led by the golden-robed man and the gaunt man slipped out of their residence with great discretion and set off towards Starfall Hall.

The lockdown had only just been lifted, and this was the precise window when cultivators were permitted to move about again. But the hour was early, and very few people seemed to be out in the city.

This made the seven of them even more cautious. Every man was tense, heads down, concentrating solely on the journey.

Only the golden-robed man at the front kept glancing around as he flew, sweeping the surroundings.

The road was smooth. They travelled without incident all the way to the forty-ninth layer of the Sacred Mountain. Just a little further, and they would reach Starfall Hall.

Only then did their expressions relax, and the weight in their hearts finally lift.

But at that moment, the golden-robed man leading the way suddenly changed his expression and halted his flying light. His face solemn, he raised a hand and made a strange gesture.

The men behind him saw this, their faces shifting as they too stopped. Every one of them immediately assumed a defensive posture.

“What does this friend mean by blocking our path with an invisibility technique?” the golden-robed man said, his voice icy cold as he stared at an empty spot ahead.

At the same time, his palm had silently fallen to the storage pouch at his waist.

“Hehe, no need to be alarmed, friends. I have been waiting here specifically for you all, but I mean no harm. I merely have a request.”

A slightly hoarse voice drifted unhurriedly from the front. Then a flash of azure light bloomed where there had been nothing, and a cultivator in a blue robe appeared, hands clasped behind his back.

The man appeared to be in his middle years, his complexion pale, as though he were suffering from some ailment.

But as soon as the golden-robed man’s group clearly registered the man’s cultivation level, their hearts all jumped in alarm and their wariness soared.

The newcomer was at the same late Foundation Establishment stage as the golden-robed man—also at the Half-Foundation threshold.

“What is your name, friend? I cannot imagine how we could be of help to you.” The golden-robed man’s eyes flashed with a cold light, but his voice remained calm as he asked.

“My surname is Qu. I am merely a rogue cultivator. Are you not all heading to Starfall Hall? Could you take me along? I too wish to go to the Outer Star Seas.” The blue-robed man spoke very casually, uttering words that made the faces opposite him turn green.

Upon hearing this, the golden-robed man’s expression grew even more unsettled. After a moment of silence, he forced a smile and denied it:

“So it’s Friend Qu. But you mention Starfall Hall and the Outer Star Seas—what does that mean? We are simply passing through on some private business and have nothing to do with Starfall Hall. Perhaps you have the wrong people.”

The golden-robed man had already made up his mind. He had no idea who this man was or how he had learned of their plans, but he absolutely could not admit to it.

The others did not interrupt, leaving the matter entirely to the man to handle.

“Friend Yi, why must you be so cautious? Since I have appeared here at this very moment, do you really think you can fob me off with words like that?” The blue-robed man laughed lightly, his tone dismissive.

“Hmph! So you know a great deal, and you even recognize me.” The golden-robed man’s heart tightened. After a cold snort, the hand resting on his storage pouch unconsciously clenched until the veins bulged.

The men behind him, as if receiving some hidden signal, moved with wordless默契 and suddenly spread out, half-surrounding the blue-robed man in the middle.

“Surely you are not thinking of killing me to silence me? I am not boasting, but with my cultivation, you could not kill me in an instant, even if you all attacked at once. Then I would shout and summon the Star Palace guards. What do you suppose would happen to you then?” The blue-robed cultivator acted as though he had not seen their movements at all, speaking lazily.

At these words, the dark-faced cultivator and the others exchanged uncertain glances. Their eyes then fell on the golden-robed man.

The man’s expression was extremely ugly.

Though he had not yet formed his Core, he had always prided himself on his cunning. When had he ever been so brazenly threatened by a Foundation Establishment cultivator?

But he knew very well that the man’s threat was real, not an idle joke.

Weighing the pros and cons in his heart, he could only suppress his anger and ask coldly:

“What exactly does Friend want from us? We have already agreed with the other side that there would be seven of us, and the teleportation array can only transport seven cultivators at a time. If there is one more of you, they certainly will not agree.”

Upon hearing this, the blue-robed man gave a slight smile.

“Rest assured. I will not put you in a difficult position. I only need to enter the hall. Once inside, I will find a way to convince them myself. If they refuse, I will not force the matter, and I certainly will not ruin your business.”

“Is that all?” The golden-robed man frowned, a hint of suspicion on his face.

“That is all.” The blue-robed man said with great certainty.

“Very well. If it is only a matter of an introduction, that is not impossible. We accept.” The golden-robed man deliberated for a moment before finally gritting his teeth and agreeing.

“Then I thank you, Friend.” The blue-robed man’s expression remained unchanged, as though he had long expected the golden-robed man’s capitulation. He gave a slight bow of his hands.

“Since Friend is also going to Starfall Hall, let us hurry. We have already wasted some time. The other party is probably getting impatient.” The gaunt man looked up at the sky and urged impatiently.

Hearing this, the blue-robed man glanced at the gaunt man but said nothing. The golden-robed man, without a word, waved his hand and led the group onward once more.

The formation in which they flew had, intentionally or not, placed the blue-robed cultivator in the center. It seemed their vigilance had not lessened in the slightest.

The blue-robed cultivator did not change his expression at all. He followed the group at a leisurely pace.

There was not much road left. After a short while, they arrived before Starfall Hall.

At that point, the gaunt man suddenly accelerated, shooting ahead and landing first.

The golden-robed man and the others did not look surprised at this.

After all, it had always been this man who had been in contact with Starfall Hall. Now that they had arrived, it was only natural for him to take the lead, to avoid any misunderstandings.

Once they entered Starfall Hall, the men did their best to maintain a composed appearance, but an uneasy flutter could still be seen in their demeanor.

The moment they stepped inside, their lives were entirely in the hands of the other party.

But everything seemed normal. The prohibitions that ought to have been in place did not appear. It seemed whoever was in charge inside had deactivated them in advance.

The blue-robed man’s eyes flickered with a trace of strangeness at this.

The others, however, felt much more at ease. They finally entered the great hall that housed the teleportation array. There, two Star Palace cultivators in white robes were waiting for them.

“Senior Gu, Senior Qian! We have arrived. Have you prepared everything on your end?” The gaunt man immediately put on a fawning smile as he stepped forward and greeted them with great deference.

The two cultivators were cold and expressionless. In response to the gaunt man’s question, only the bald old man gave a haughty nod.

“What is there to prepare on our end? Hand over the spirit stones, take one teleportation talisman each, and you can leave immediately. But the number of spirit stones is correct, I trust?” The old man said slowly.

“Rest assured, Senior. We have brought exactly the spirit stones we agreed upon.” The golden-robed man stepped forward and spoke with the same deference.

“So you are Friend Yi. Your cultivation is indeed impressive.” The bald old man gave the golden-robed man a few casual glances, his tone slightly more polite.

But when his gaze swept over the others and finally landed on Han Li, his face suddenly darkened.

“Did I not say seven people? Why is there one more? This friend here appears to be at the Half-Foundation stage as well. Who might he be?” The bald old man asked coldly, his words full of accusation.

“He is…” The golden-robed man gave a bitter smile and started to explain.

“I am a rogue cultivator, and I also wish to travel to the Outer Star Seas. I heard that Friend Yi and his companions had a way, so I sought them out. I hope you two seniors will not take offense. And if the seniors would be willing to make an exception, I am prepared to pay double the teleportation fee.” Han Li spoke with a smile, cutting off the golden-robed man.

“Double the fee?” The bald old man was taken aback. He then turned to look at the other cultivator beside him, a man with a refined, scholarly face.

“Even if you pay double, it will not work. The teleportation array can only carry seven people at a time, and we will only activate a single array. We will not perform an extra teleportation just for you. Otherwise, it would be difficult to hide it from our superiors.” This middle-aged cultivator frowned slightly and spoke slowly.

“I have considered that as well, Senior. I will not put you in a difficult position. So, could I borrow your teleportation slot?” Han Li smiled faintly, then suddenly turned his head and said bluntly to the man beside him.

“What did you say?” The man was stunned at first, then his face filled with utter bewilderment.
