The Secret of the Talisman Treasure

1,716 words

“Elder Ding, would you mind taking a look at this item? This junior believes it to be a thousand-year-old spirit herb, but my confidence is not absolute. I would ask Elder Ding to verify its age.” Manager Tian’s tone was humble as he presented the brocade box.

“A thousand-year spirit herb?” Elder Ding’s voice carried a hint of disbelief, but he accepted the box nonetheless.

“Please examine it carefully! Is it truly a thousand-year-old Yellow Essence Mushroom?” Manager Tian struggled to suppress his mounting excitement, his words coming faster.

The old man did not reply. He narrowed his eyes, studying the object in the box with absolute concentration—its shape, its color, even its texture—and from time to time he brought the box to his nose for a light sniff.

Han Li had personally cultivated this herb with the vial’s green liquid, so he knew full well whether it was a thousand-year-old spirit plant. He sat nearby with an expression of perfect composure, acting as if the old man’s examination were beneath his notice. His mind was occupied with a different calculation entirely: how to negotiate with the Ten Thousand Treasures Pavilion.

Manager Tian, in contrast, could not tear his eyes away from Elder Ding’s every move. The unflappable demeanor he had shown Han Li earlier had vanished completely. His face now cycled through a tangled web of anticipation and anxiety—the classic expression of a man caught between hope and fear of disappointment.

At last, Elder Ding set the box gently back on the table. He stroked his beard, closed his eyes in contemplation for a moment, then opened them and spoke in a calm, authoritative tone:

“I congratulate you, Manager. This is indeed a thousand-year Yellow Essence Mushroom, without a doubt. What’s more, it appears to have been unearthed very recently—its medicinal properties are completely intact, making it an exceedingly rare specimen. On this point, this old man can offer a full guarantee.”

Manager Tian’s face lit up with joy. He personally saw the old man down the stairs, then picked up the box containing the spirit herb and examined it again and again, unable to contain his delight.

Manager Tian, shouldn’t we discuss the terms of our transaction?” Han Li’s voice cut in, a mild reminder that the herb’s owner was still sitting right there.

“Oh… ah! This humble one’s memory has failed him. Please forgive me, Brother Li!” Manager Tian blinked, then flushed slightly as he remembered that this spirit herb did not yet belong to the Ten Thousand Treasures Pavilion.

“Heh, it’s nothing. But I am curious how you intend to proceed. Seeing how much you cherish this item, Manager, I trust you won’t disappoint me.” Han Li’s light laugh carried a subtle prod.

By now, Manager Tian had recovered his composure. He placed the box back on the table before speaking.

“Since Brother Li is able to produce a thousand-year spirit herb, you are clearly no ordinary cultivator. Then I will not insult you with the usual merchant’s tricks. Let me offer you a fair price.”

He paused in thought for a moment, then continued in a sincere tone:

“This spirit herb can be exchanged for any two of the treasures in the brocade boxes I showed you earlier. Alternatively, it can be traded for the contents of the final box alone. If neither option appeals to you, this pavilion is also willing to purchase the herb outright for spirit stones at a price you will find satisfactory. Brother Li, what do you think?”

Han Li sensed the sincerity in the man’s words. Turning the offer over in his mind several times, he concluded that the terms were reasonable and did not exceed his bottom line. He was already seventy or eighty percent inclined to accept. But before committing, he still wanted to see what was inside that last brocade box.

Manager Tian, as if reading his intent, lifted the lid of the final box without waiting for Han Li to speak and pushed it forward with a genial smile.

“What is contained in this box is the pavilion’s greatest treasure. However, it remains to be seen whether Brother Li can recognize its worth!”

Han Li’s curiosity flared. He cast his gaze into the box—and froze, momentarily stunned.

Inside the brocade box lay a single talisman. Upon it was drawn the image of a golden brick, gleaming with metallic luster, vivid and lifelike.

The moment Han Li registered what he was seeing, his mind began to race. His thoughts immediately leaped to that other talisman he possessed, the one with the image of a gray short sword. Could this be the same kind of item?

“A Talisman Treasure?” Han Li let out a deep breath, his voice uncertain.

A flicker of surprise passed across Manager Tian’s face, followed by genuine astonishment.

“Truly unexpected. Brother Li can actually identify this item! In theory, very few cultivators should know of such treasures. Your breadth of knowledge is admirable, Brother Li. This humble one is impressed.”

Han Li let out a bitter laugh and shook his head with a sigh.

“You overestimate me, Manager. I have only heard the name ‘Talisman Treasure’ and know precious little about the details. But since you can produce such an item, Manager, you must be familiar with its properties. I would ask you to enlighten me.”

These words were completely sincere. Han Li genuinely wanted to take this opportunity to thoroughly understand the origins and nature of Talisman Treasures, rather than stumbling through the dark as he had been.

Manager Tian studied Han Li with a hint of surprise. Deciding that this was hardly a state secret—merely something few knew about—and not worth offending a major client over, he agreed readily and proceeded to explain everything concerning Talisman Treasures.

A “Talisman Treasure” had a remarkable origin. It was a unique item that only cultivators at the Core Formation realm and above could create.

It was a specially crafted talisman produced when a high-level cultivator who had already refined a true magic treasure sealed a portion of that treasure’s power into a specially prepared talisman paper. This allowed other cultivators to temporarily wield a fraction of that treasure’s might. Such an item possessed the dual properties of both talisman and magic treasure, and those cultivators who knew of its existence called it a “false treasure,” highly sought after by all.

This “false treasure” was extremely unusual. Creating one required a Core Formation cultivator or higher, but using one required no such restriction—any cultivator, regardless of their realm, could employ it. Even a cultivator at the third or fourth layer of Qi Condensation, like the Brilliant Gold Elder Han Li had killed, could use it with passable effectiveness.

However, cultivators below Foundation Establishment lacked the technique of condensation and refinement. They could only unleash ten or twenty percent of a Talisman Treasure’s true power—little better than a top-grade magical tool.

Once a cultivator reached Foundation Establishment, however, they could use their heart-mind to perform the condensation and refinement method, bringing out the Talisman Treasure’s full power without any loss. While that power could not match the earth-shattering, mountain-crushing might of a true magic treasure, it was still enough to look down upon all other magical tools. Thus, every cultivator above Foundation Establishment dreamed of owning a Talisman Treasure. It would give them a decisive edge in any conflict, allowing them to dominate their peers.

Despite its astonishing power, a Talisman Treasure constantly consumed the stored treasure might each time it was used. Once that power was exhausted, the Talisman Treasure was ruined forever. Controlling the rate of consumption was therefore a matter of no small importance.

Furthermore, creating a Talisman Treasure was far from simple.

A magic treasure was originally an item that only Core Formation cultivators could refine. Such treasures were not only rare but also required constant tempering within the cultivator’s true essence to increase their power. They were not lightly shown to others, let alone used to create a Talisman Treasure.

This was because creating a Talisman Treasure effectively meant dividing and giving away a portion of the treasure’s might—an act that harmed the treasure’s owner. Every time a Talisman Treasure was made, its owner would have to spend a long time re-tempering the treasure to restore its lost power. It was a classic case of benefiting others at one’s own expense. Under normal circumstances, no Core Formation cultivator or above would do such a foolish thing.

But as the saying goes, the world is full of unpredictability. This seemingly idiotic act of creating Talisman Treasures was something most high-level cultivators would pursue with a frenzy—but only when their lifespan was nearly exhausted. Their purpose was to leave a significant asset for their descendants or disciples.

When a predecessor’s magic treasure was inherited at length, the new owner could never achieve perfect heart-mind unity with it. The original treasure’s power would be reduced by more than half, and even then, the new owner had to reach Core Formation themselves just to use it. If they could not, they could only stare helplessly at the treasure, unable to wield it at all. Thus, compared to leaving behind a complete treasure, creating a Talisman Treasure was far more suitable for one’s successors.

However, creating a Talisman Treasure came with many restrictions.

First, each Talisman Treasure could seal at most one-tenth of a magic treasure’s power—only less, never more. As a result, Talisman Treasures created from the same treasure could vary widely in power.

Second, creating a Talisman Treasure not only reduced the treasure’s power but also caused the treasure’s owner to lose significant vitality. Sustained production of Talisman Treasures was therefore impossible. Every time one was made, the owner would need three to five years to recover their vitality—and that was assuming they did not waste true essence or attempt to re-temper the treasure. If they did, the recovery time would be even longer.

Thus, a common scene in the cultivation world was this: when a high-level cultivator’s lifespan was at an end, after making preparations for their seated dissolution, the most valuable items they left behind were often a much-weakened magic treasure and several Talisman Treasures containing the same sealed power. It was a matter of no small regret.
