A Display of Prowess

1,096 words

“Where is she?” Han Li asked urgently, snapping out of his daze.

“Over there.”

Following Li Feiyu’s gaze, Han Li finally spotted Zhang Xiuer in a corner of the crowd. She was standing with two other female disciples who were also participating in the deathmatch. She wore a plain white dress, her apricot lips slightly bitten, looking as fragile as a small white flower, pitiful and delicate.

“How could a gentle girl like Miss Zhang end up in a bloody fight like this? Is that Wang out of his mind?” Han Li said, still unable to believe his eyes.

“Xiuer is a core disciple of Seven Peaks Hall. Did I never tell you that?” Li Feiyu gave a bitter smile and let out a piece of news that shocked Han Li.

Han Li fell silent.

Clearly, the Seven Mysteries Sect had very few expert fighters left here. Their Sect Leader Wang had no intention of showing any chivalry toward the fairer sex. To win this deathmatch, he had even sent someone as delicate as Zhang Xiuer to the arena. It seemed he was wagering everything on a single desperate gamble.

“Brother, I won’t waste words. I’m going to stay with Xiuer. Take care of yourself.” Li Feiyu gave Han Li’s shoulder a firm squeeze and said softly, then turned to walk back into the crowd.

He hadn’t taken two steps when he heard a soft sigh from behind. A breeze stirred, and a figure appeared beside him—it was Han Li.

“What’s the big deal? A death contract fight? A little scene like this isn’t enough to trouble me. We’ve been friends for a while. I’ll help with this small favor.” Han Li said with a smile.

Li Feiyu didn’t waste words. He turned around and punched Han Li hard in the chest. “Good brother! Thanks!”

Han Li smiled and said nothing. As he had told himself, he had come along for two reasons. First, he had known Li Feiyu for a long time and their bond was deep. He couldn’t bear to watch his friend go into danger alone. Second, he was confident in his own skills and didn’t think the so-called experts of the Wild Wolf Gang could pose much of a threat to someone who had already mastered the Fireball Technique and the Wind Riding Technique. Besides, he was itching to test out his current strength.

The two men pushed their way through the crowd and strode directly toward Wang Juechu. On the way, they tore off the garments of the Waterfall Sect they were wearing, revealing the uniforms of the Seven Mysteries Sect.

The sudden appearance of Han Li and Li Feiyu before the crowd, along with their abrupt change of identity, left both sides stunned. For a moment, no one moved to stop them, and they easily reached Wang Juechu.

“Hall Master Li!”

“Doctor Han!”

Many disciples on the Seven Mysteries Sect’s side recognized the two famous figures and cried out in surprise.

Zhang Xiuer’s face lit up with joy at the sight of Li Feiyu. If there weren’t so many people around, she would have thrown herself into her beloved’s arms to pour out her heart.

Sect Leader Wang naturally recognized them as well. A flicker of surprise passed through his eyes. Their sudden appearance was wholly unexpected.

“Li Feiyu, Vice Hall Master of the Outer Blade Hall, reporting to the Sect Leader,” Li Feiyu announced loudly.

“We are willing to sign the death contract and join the blood fight. I ask the Sect Leader to grant our request.” Without waiting for Wang to question them, Li Feiyu stated their purpose directly. Han Li stood silently beside him, acting as if he was following Li Feiyu’s lead.

Sect Leader Wang swallowed the words of reprimand that had risen to his throat. A hint of a smile appeared on his cold face as he spoke warmly:

“Excellent! You are truly loyal disciples of the Seven Mysteries Sect. With Hall Master Li joining the fight, our sect’s chances are that much better. However, Doctor Han should not participate. His medical skills are still of great use to the sect. It would be a heavy loss if an accident befell him in the deathmatch.”

Hearing this, Han Li merely smiled. Without waiting for Li Feiyu to explain, he gave a slight shake of his body, and his figure vanished from right before Sect Leader Wang’s eyes.

Wang was startled. He was about to look around when he heard Han Li’s lazy voice coming from behind him.

“I wonder if my skills are worthy of the Sect Leader’s consideration? I think I have the ability to protect myself in a deathmatch. I only ask the Sect Leader to grant this loyal subject’s request.”

Wang Juechu’s heart was filled with shock. It had never occurred to him that Han Li, a man known throughout the sect for his medical skills, possessed such terrifying movement techniques. He had been silently infiltrated from behind without the slightest awareness.

“What frightening skill! Just what kind of person is this? What is his purpose in hiding in our sect?” A string of alarming thoughts flooded into Wang Juechu’s mind.

He turned around and looked at Han Li, who still wore that harmless, innocent expression. His gaze then shifted to his three uncles.

Their expressions had changed slightly, and a hint of shock was visible in their eyes. It was clear that Doctor Han’s displayed skills had made them deeply wary as well.

Several different thoughts churned through Wang Juechu’s mind before he finally made a decision.

He suddenly let out a few loud laughs before speaking amiably:

“Since Doctor Han has such sincere loyalty to the sect, how could I, as its leader, possibly refuse?”

He then pointed and ordered the two weakest disciples originally selected for the deathmatch to step out of the line. Han Li and Li Feiyu were added in their place. He had them sign the blood-red contract in black ink first, making them the first members of the deathmatch team.

Jia Tianlong naturally watched the commotion on the Seven Mysteries Sect’s side with complete clarity. Although he was somewhat surprised that they had gained two more experts, he didn’t take it very seriously. After all, he believed that a mortal body of flesh and blood could not withstand the flying sword technique of the Brilliant Gold Elder.

And so, after both sides had signed the death contracts and exchanged the documents, the blood fight, from which only one side could walk out alive, finally began.
